Test Director Problems – November 17, 2004

For those of you who have successfully installed Mercury's Test Director, and have it die suddenly, you need to check the IIS/NTFS permissions. (Note, for those of you asking questions, you should read all four pages of comments - there are various questions and answers given throughout the comments, and you will be able to get your answer quicker than waiting for someone to see your question)

Test Director uses the IIS IUSR_SERVERNAME user by default, and if you haven't set your permissions correctly on your directories, this user will not have access to the files.
To see if this is the problem or not, go to the IIS Manager and the TDBIN directory, then choose directory security (make sure it is on anonymous access only) and edit the anonymous user to be the local Administrator account (type in the password).
Then try accessing your server again. If this works, then you know it is a permissions issue, and you should probably go change the anonymous user back to the IUSR_XXXX account, and fix the directory/NTFS permissions to allow the IUSR_XXX user access to the necessary Test Director directories.
For the record/search engines:
The error I got when I had this problem was:
Error in parameter: [TDsrvURL]
Error: Server is not initialized
Press OK to continue or CANCEL to close application
Not the most intuitive error message in the world

What client browser? I had that happen a couple times, and I was able to get it fixed by erasing the cache, and hitting reload a bunch, things like that.

I am trying to install testdirector onto W2K professional with SP4 but the install fails: == Once I run the setup, it takes me thru the first few screens, and when the screen comes with user and asks to enter the password, a pop-up appears with "Unknown user and password". Thus the install stops. It does not go any further. Please advise. Thanks muradrahman2004@yahoo.com =========

Sorry, don't know. Did you set up the user and password during the setup? Are the dropdown menus for the project name filled in, or are they blank?

I am getting the same Error in Parameter [TDSrvURL]. I am also getting cannot connect to server when I try to open the Management Server. I have reset permissions on IIS to administrator and it did not work. I have also double checked to make sure that all the virtual directories in TDBIN have Execute Permissions set to Scripts and Executables as it says to do on the mercury website at http://kb-index.mercury.com/web/queries/KBAview.asp?Product=TD&Conceptid=9927&BVUserID= it is still not working and I'm at a total loss it was working two days ago. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance!

I moved my TD 8.0 DB to a new server. I also shutdown the TD server and moved the machine to a new network and powered it up. The applicaton comes up but now I get RPC server not found errors. I thought I could configure the new DB connection info via the Administration page but I can't get past the RPC errors. What am I doing wrong? Thanks! kirk

I am trying to install TestDirector 7.6 SP2 on Windows XP Sp2 machine with MS Access 2000 as database. IIS Server running fine. I installed TD 7.6 successfully. But when I click Test Director link, it runs all the plugin scripts and shows a pop up error message saying "RPC Server Unavailable". And Also I do not see any test demo db under the left drop down. I see under Adminstrator tools > Services, all the RPC related services are running fine. Please let me know how to solve this problem. Any help is highly appreciated.

I really don't know very much. Test Director appears to be very hard to set up, and keep running if anything ever changes on the server.

Some of the information I posted above is from Mercury's technical support (877-837-8457), and some was from my own poking around.

My goal was to merely get it running so we could extract the data and put it into a system that would actually work (ie. text documents), which seems to be vastly superior to Test Director.

I have TD installed in a server and accessing it from a client machine. I get the following error; setup_a.ini is not opened for editing. Close all connections to TD and try again.. Couldnt figure out why, any insight to this one??

My guess would be that the file is read-only, or the file or one of the parent directories is not giving permission to the TD server. What user is the server running as, and what permissions do the directories have? Can you mark all files and directories as having full control for everyone?

hi.. in one computer when i click on the t-d adress i get a blank page.. i cant connect to t-d from that computer( it worked before) help..:(

But you can connect from other computers? The client-side java machine is probably broken.

I would first try cleaning the cache, and making sure that all of the locally installed TD stuff is gone - I forget what the directory name is, "Downloaded" or "Installed" apps or something in the windows directory, maybe in the "local settings" directory inside "Documents and Settings". I don't know if TD requires java downloaded from Sun or Microsoft, or if it comes with everything it needs. If you have a Java Run Time Engine installed on that system, maybe it needs to be upgraded (or maybe removed).

Are there any errors in the IIS or tomcat logs?
