Mmm.... Nope. You don't need memcache compiled with PHP.

Because I got the native memcache class from Media Wiki.

But, you do need a "dedicate" server for this feature. Because you need your
own memcached deamon.

And, as Oscar said, you can back port it to 1.1 only. For 1.0 or any version
before 1.0, it is impossible.
