It should be technically possible to backport the memcache code from
1.2 to 1.1.x, I think it's a pretty direct port (just overwrite the
files)

I don't know much about memcache other than it should be pretty fast
and that you need a machine with plenty of RAM free to be used as the
memcache server. You also need of course support for memcache compiled
in PHP.
