It is probably important to figure out what it should look like
for the user. I was thinking of a checkbox when submitting a comment, so
that is pretty intuitive, I think.
For the rest of it, maybe there should be a templated page that
shows a list of all possible things to subscribe to, categories, all
posts, all comments, anything else?
One difference between subscribing to a post when placing a
comment is that if it ends up marked as spam, the request can be ignored
(I think), but we would need a verification system for the other types of
subscriptions, so people don't get signed up by someone else.
Maybe it is enough to have a confirmation link sent to the email
address, and it can be ignored by the receiver. And then I suppose a
captcha can help limit it too.
It could probably all be in one plugin "subscribe". Then
different parts can be enabled by the administrator. There is a bunch of
stuff to add to each template to make the checkboxes show up.
