Yes, but I don't think threre are any ForceTypes in effect after I
remove the .htaccess, but it's still working...

Yes, that's what I'm thinking, too

I read about that in the forums (you were involved in the discussions, I
think). The server is running apache 1.3.x not 2. AFAIK there is no
AcceptPathInfo for 1.3.x but maybe something similar???

Yes! This helped (sort of). It clearly shows that the server is
generating 404s but still serves what it should....

So, I uploaded the htaccess again, preventing 404s but it still behaves
like it always did. serving the pages as expected *headbang*. The 404s
don't lead me to the actual problem, but that's maybe a bit too much on
a server I don't have shell access...
