Data Center Migration – April 29, 2009
For those customers on "shared" hosting plans, you shouldn't see any difference, for those customers with colocation plans, you will now have better access to the facilities, and there are some bonus perks of conference room space and in general a nicer facility than the old one.
IP addresses will not change, so DNS records and whitelists, etc. don't need to be updated.
The plan is to unplug all of the servers just after 9PM tonight, and they will probably be down for 30-60 minutes. No incoming email will be lost, as the senders' ISPs will retry once the servers come back up. All email, web and FTP access will be down for this period.
I assume that as a small company, you react slowly and often aren't available? (read more)
Not at all. Lime Daley offers round the clock support for all urgent requests. When submitting a ticket via our online support system, you will be asked whether the request is urgent or not. If the request is truly urgent, i.e. your site is malfunctioning, or some other techical problem, please make use of the "urgent" status and provide a callback number and someone will be paged immediately and return your call.
Lime Daley's Recommendations
In the course of doing business with various vendors, we have come across those that we recommend to others whenever we get the chance. (We also have vendors that we'd specifically not recommend, but that's for another day.)
- Teraswitch is our upstream provider, and also a reliable hosting provider in the Pittsburgh area. Let them know you heard about them from Lime Daley.
- My DNS provider is excellent, but unfortunately, due to a recent change in their terms of service, I am not allowed to tell you who that is - seems like a really bizarre marketing decision, but they forced me to agree to those terms if I wanted to continue using their service. If you are technical enough, you can look up our name servers and find out who they are. Hopefully, their marketing department is just out of touch and their technical services won't be affected by these new changes.
ALPS Touchpad Configuration in Debian – April 09, 2009 (read more)
After spending hours trying to get the HAL/FDI method to work, I resorted to modifying the xorg.conf directly, though I was able to only add a couple lines, since my current xorg.conf is basically empty, with everything being auto-detected.
The main difference that I wanted (from lots of other posted information) was that I liked the fdi method of configuring things (xorg.conf has always been a scary file to play with) and so I didn't want to have to hard-code everything, which means, as far as I could figure out, to not have a ServerLayout section at all since once I added that to get the touchpad to work properly, it broke everything else.
Welcome Circuit Cellar Readers – April 08, 2009
A hearty welcome goes out to those engineers and hobbyists who have found us via the recent Circuit Cellar article about our DOS USB project last year.
We hope to post more articles about past projects soon. The articles will be back-posted (with timestamps to match the dates the projects were completed), so be sure to check the projects page again later.
If you are interested in hiring Lime Daley for embedded software and/or hardware, we'd be happy to hear from you.
