What do I need to do to test it? I have a machine that I can
install mysql4 on. I need to set the character set of the database to
be latin1 and install lifetype and try it out, and then erase it, set the
database to utf8, and install try it out again? Do I need to set the
configuration parameter to match, or will it get the setting from the
database? I am not clear on what the charset setting is in the config
file.

We're making progress. Things are getting worse at a slower rate.
