This does seem to make quite a difference. I've generated a small  
test script with 25 requests and executed it with the code before and  
after the changes, and although 25 requests is statistically not a  
very representative group, I think it's enough to give us an idea...  
as most of the requests ran between 40% to 100% faster. This could  
also be because PHP has never worked too fast in OS X, so probably  
the speed increase in systems like Linux will be smaller. But I  
suppose that a small speed increase is better than no speed increase  
at all :)
