I'll play a bit with the smarty plugins and see if I can about with a 
generic way that can be used for Lifetype-Plugins.

Sorry, if that sounded a bit harsh, that wasn't my intention. I don't 
think that AJAX is bad by itself. I'm familiar with the concept and 
implementation. We're using remote javascripting in one of your 
applications. AJAX can enhance the user experience and usability, but in 
my opinion, a fallback solution is needed (disabled javascript in 
browser). In any case on crucial parts like authentication.
