I've been hit every day with about 10-15 spam trackbacks, and I also  
noticed the outrageous execution times in the stats file. But yes, I  
do believe they have something to do with the validatetrackback.

On the other hand, this is the normal behaviour of the plugin: check  
if the page where the trackback is coming from really exists so if  
the server is slow or far away, it could potentially take very long  
to get a reply.
