I don't use the plugin, so I am writing with some ignorance.
The plugin comes with (or gives instructions for) an .htaccess file that
include the "sitemap.gz" lines you include below, but say "sitemap"
instead of "sitemap.gz"?
There is a configuration option in Apache, I don't think widely
used, though I have no idea if it is on by default, to basically
auto-search for extensions. The nifty thing about this if you provide a
link to your web site: http://domain/resume and originally that pointed to
resume.html, but now you are fancy, and it points to resume.php, and then
link doesn't need to be updated. Similarly, you could have a picture that
you reference without an extension, and you can change the type from .gif
to .png without changing the html.
Anyway, all that to say, that might be why you need to explicitly
reference the .gz, and others don't.
It should be added to a readme, and one could easily make the
argument that the default should be set to .gz to cover more people by
default.

You've all heard of the asteroid that will crash into the planet in
2028. If that's the case, I think we should definitely pollute
the environment.
