sorry I've got no idea about these things... As I said, I had already
given up regarding this and I was happy enough to use LIKE instead of
fulltext indexes for our search engine.

But we can still provide FULLTEXT indexes for users or iso-8859-x
encodings... How about those modifications that I suggested to make
the search engine use both depending on the detected version of php?
