Turns out that it was my mistake after all... There was no value 
assigned to template_compile_check when doing the upgrade via the 
wizard.php script and it defaulted to 'false', meaning that Smarty was 
completely ignoring any change made to the templates and using the 
already compiled versions unless you explicitely enabled this in the 
admin interface.

Sorry about that, but good that somebody found it :-)
